Heh, I always thought that the whole "power" thing was kinda like Megaman. I think it was more of a "life essence" or something. I remember an episode where Duncan McLeod would kill this really evil immortal, and his power would end up turning Duncan evil, mad, or something like that.
I think the best thing about the series is the whole "Watchers" thing. It was kind of ridiculous the idea that no one would know about the immortals. Also Mythos is awesome.

And you forgot to mention Queen.
It kinda goes back and forth. Sometimes it suggests it's just a general will. sometimes direct knowledge. There's implications it might improve swordsmanship, or eventually lead to special powers over time. But all in all its never really nailed down. Or when it is nailed down, it is later contradicted.
Also, i did not need to mention queen, as mentioning highlander should instaintly blare either 'born to be kings' or 'who wants to live forever' in your head at a volume of eleven.
The first movie was awesome, but the sequels were awful. I'll give the franchise props for introducing me to Queen though.
The TV show seemed to make up for these awful movies. Sucks that Hulu isn't available in my country (stupid copyright BS..)
Also, there's even an anime film titled "Highlander:The Search for Vengeance" and critics are saying that it's possibly even better than the original film. I should check that out at some point.
I just hope they don't screw up "The Reckoning" reboot of the franchise.
I think there might have been as many as five movies now.
I remember one of the sequals not being horrid... but still not great. i think it might have been the fourth one.
